Know Your Role

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

When you understand your Role in your Family, you Understand your Role in the World

Your Tribe is the group of people that you are here to live/work with. In order to find your Tribe, it's best to really understand the role that you are naturally inclined to fall into. Understanding the role you play will better help you in finding your work Tribe and ensure that you are serving everyone the best you can. If you're wondering what role would best suit you, it may be helpful to understand the role that you play in the family that you grew up in. Understanding your role in your family will also help you be a better family member, and help with the relationship that you have with each of them.

There are certain archetypes that are essential for a well-rounded and strong tribe or family, which are the Leader, the Homemaker, the Entertainer, and the Provider. Here is my quick definition for each one:

The Leader: the one to look up to for guidance and ensures the Tribe is safe and healthy. With wisdom and experience under their belt, the Leader helps make the tough decisions that affects the whole family

The Homemaker: One that creates the nest where the family can rest, play, share meals, train, study, and just enjoy life together

The Entertainer: One that keeps the house entertained, and usually the one that keeps the peace between everyone. The Entertainer makes the house feel fun and light

The Protector: One who makes sure that they are all safe and all necessities are secured. The Protector makes sure the the home is safe from any outside threats

The Provider: One that goes out and finds the resources to sustain the well-being of the family

No role is more important than the others - they are all vital in creating a happy and healthy home and family. Now these roles can be played by more than one person, and one person can play more than one role.

When you think back and remember what your family life is like, what role did/do you play? What role do you feel most inclined to play in the future? When you can identify the role that you play in your family, it can sometimes lead to the type of work you would like to contribute to the world.

Perhaps you haven't fully come into your role in your family - how would you like to change that? How can you use your skills to contribute to the family and enrich their lives?

"Understanding your role in your family will also help you be a better family member as well, and help with the relationship that you have with each of them"

I grew up with a large extended family, with many aunts and uncles and even more cousins. In this huge Tribe that I was a part of, I was the absolute youngest - so the role I played was always the "baby" of the family. As I reflect back on my life, I noticed that I this role that I played in my family bled through how I projected myself in school and when I first the workforce. I was always the one that people felt inclined to take care of, which gave them a sense of purpose and feeling leadership on their part. As I've matured and learned about who I am and what I'm passionate about, I am looking to transition the role I have with my family, and eventually the role that I play in the community at large.

I considered myself the entertainer - I was always down to have a good time and to make peace when others were disagreeing. I was always a storyteller, and I would entertain with sharing the wild experiences I would come across. In moving towards this new role that I want to step into in my life, I would still like to exude these traits. I'd like to take more of a nurturing and teaching role, and using the education that I have under my belt to help my family with their diet and lifestyle. As I do this for my family, I will be better equipped to help others, to see what works and what doesn't, and what is palatable for those that are used to the standard North American lifestyle.
